OUR FOUNDER, A TRUE AMERICAN HERO, PATRIOT & REBEL ! (1990 - 2011)

George L. Towns, E-Z Anchor Puller's Founder, poses with a drum anchor winch. He was a true American Patriot!

E-Z Anchor Puller Mfg. Co. was founded in 1990 by George L. Towns. Born and raised in Ludington, MI., George graduated in 1943 in his hometown then enlisted and served during World War II with the U.S. Navy's Naval Construction Battalion - the "SeaBees". He was tasked tasked with operating overhead cranes and loading ships during his tour of duty.

After the war, Towns opened the first Sport Fishing Marina in Ludington - the Tamarac Sportfishing Dock. He made his own downriggers and started a charter operation on his 38-foot boat, Moonlighter, while simultaneously operating a sports fishing store in downtown Ludington. In 1985 while fishing fro his winter home in Islamorada, Florida Keys for yellow-tailed snapper, he became frustrated with tangled anchor lines and safety hazards of climbing out on the bow of his boat to set and retrieve his anchor.

Calling on his years of military experience in WWII, George had an idea for a deck-mounted drum anchor winch that would eliminate the tangled and frayed anchor lines with superior holding capacity, thus also avoiding tying off to a cleat. Fabricating PVC plastic brackets, a base plate and stainless steel spool, George mounted a modified Ramsey speed reducer / worm gear electric winch that were often used on tow trucks and small overhead cranes and the first "Easy" Anchor Puller was born.

George had no intention of selling his one-of-a-kind anchor winch, however, in no time at all several of his neighbors and fishing club friends insisted he produce one for each of them. To fulfill his first bout of orders, George contracted local manufacturers to appease his peers. As positive word-of-mouth spread about the unique anchoring solution, the orders kept piling in, thus Towns' twilight years business, "E-Z Anchor Puller Mfg. Co." began in 1990.

George passed away at the age of 83, after providing the windlass-alternative anchoring solution for over 20 years to commercial businesses, charters and sport fisherman across the United States and abroad. E-Z Anchor Puller continued under George's widow, Judy Towns, for over a year before being bought by private investors in December, 2011. The business was then moved to Clearwater, Florida to better serve the charter community that fervently supported the business since it's inception.

Heros, Patriots and Rebels

After the move to Clearwater, Florida in 2014, company president Aaron Knopp sought to reinvigorate Town's original "Classic Series" designs to be more durable, convenient to use, and custom-tailored to the customer's needs. Knopp achieved this by upgrading each drum anchor winch body to 316 stainless steel, then adding more drum anchor winch sizes, totalling 9 different products segregated into three separate series: the “HERO, PATRIOT and REBEL Series", in memory of George L. Towns.

The Hero Series, manufactured for smaller boats; the Patriot Series, the shallow coastal anchoring solution; and the Rebel Series, with free-fall capabilities for charter operations out on the ocean. In addition to rebranding the product line, these newer units eliminated the fiberglass covers, exposing the 316 stainless steel bodies that better resisted corrosion.

In 2017, a patented motor was acquired, solidifying the anchoring solution as the up-and-coming standard in the industry, contributing to an unprecedented spike in sales that year. A major investment was made into developing proprietary 316 Stainless Steel motors and gearboxes. It was during this time that E-Z Anchor Puller's identity expanded from being the "Charter Captain's Choice" in anchoring solutions to the #1 factory-install request to replace the windlass from more recreational customers who wanted an easier anchoring solution. The fiberglass, Florida-based boat builder SeaVee was among the first to begin factory-installing the units upon customer request, in addition to aluminum fishing boats Kingfisher and Duckworth on the opposite side of the country in the Pacific NorthWest.

Additionally - Carolina Skiff - the first fiberglass OEM to factory-install E-Z Anchor Puller's Rebel EZ-4 drum anchor winch as the standard anchoring solution debuted their 2020 Sea Chaser 35' HFC at the Miami International Boat Show.
